Artspace is proud to announce Twilights Last Gleaming, 2024, a new limited edition silkscreen print by celebrated conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas.
Thomas bold, thoughtful, and deeply moving artwork asks us to see and challenge systems of inequality that are woven into the fabric of contemporary life, and urges communities into greater action and participation.
Twilights Last Gleaming is based on Thomas 2021 mixed media work including deconstructed political and identity-based flags and whose title references the U.S. national anthem. Thomas is known for blending historical imagery with contemporary critiques, and Twilight's Last Gleaming is no exception. Through this work, he invites viewers to reflect on the complexities of national identity and the unresolved issues of freedom and equality in the U.S.
The limited edition comes with a copy of For Freedoms: Where Do We Go From Here?, the first monograph by For Freedoms, which Thomas co-founded in 2016 together with fellow artists and friends Eric Gottesman, Michelle Woo, and Wyatt Gallery. For Freedoms centers art as a catalyst for creative civic engagement, discourse and direct action.

Thomas was awarded the 2023 U.S. Department of State Medal of Arts, and is also the recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship (2018). His groundbreaking bronze sculpture on the Boston Common entitled The Embrace, honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, sparked energetic public discourse and inspired features in The New York Times and The Boston Globe, among other leading publications.
A portion of proceeds from the sale of Twilight's Last Gleaming will benefit For Freedoms.
